President Barack Obama

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza
Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

  1. i swear he has a Nikon D80 too. I’ve seen shots on his personal stream with photos taken with a D80. Although it might not be his….

    this picture is priceless 🙂

  2. I agree.. INTERVENTION please.. one for holding the Canon like a P&S AND… he should shoot NIKON…. 🙂 We have the same birthday I think I’ll send him a text blahhhh!!!!

  3. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Fotogs at work or play – a.k.a. Photographers at work or play, and we’d love to have this added to the group!

For those of you who wrote that O is a Canon man, "Canon rule" ad nauseum, you obviously didn’t read the caption.

  4. This will no doubt get a a million views and comments due to be featured on the flickr blog, but I’ve got to say that this is priceless. The average flickrite would kill for a shot like this, possibly literally!

    Seen on blog.flickr.net (?)

  5. pretty sure that the camera belongs to his 24/7 photographer (well, 24/7 minus the time he’s sound asleep :), Pete Souza… and Obama is holding the 5D Mark II just like he would a point and shoot.. it is however a great shot of our President. the whole set is fantastic.

  6. Thanks for licensing this image as CC "by" !

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  7. it isnt his camera. canon and nikon are both excellent choices as well as any other camera.

it isnt about the camera it is about the person behind it.

  8. We’re a Nikon family here; however, if Obama is shooting Canon "full frame," it’s OK.
And, I agree with the others above: that’s no way to hold a hefty dSLR 😉

  9. A lot of people here sure are leaving comments about Nikon vs. Canon. In all seriousness, is there really a difference? I ask, cause I plan to buy a new camera soon. I was leaning towards the Canon EOS 40D.

  10. How sad, that when this man does something that is clearly wrong the sycophants come out to praise him. This is pathetic. It is clearly meant to distract us from the real issues he is ignoring.

As for other Presidents doing similar stunts, very few do it. Why? If they did they would be lambasted as buffoons, and rightly so.

Many Presidents have light moments, only the liberal ones get any POSITIVE press over it.

This is another example of the shallowness of this Administration.

    GET TO WORK.

  11. Mister Squeeze, spare us the "talking points." Trying thinking for yourself, for a change. It’s refreshing.

The last admin kept us safe. This admin is too busy creating emergency photo-ops and stunts to distract the mindless from the realities of the world, and Obama’s failures.

Iraq, still running. Obama DOING EXACTLY WHAT BUSH DID in Iraq. How is that "change?" Gitmo, still open. Not change. Europe laughing at us (well Obama, mostly). OK that is change. The world still hates us. NOT change. Economy sinking (faster). Not change. Partianship taken to a new high by Obama. Ok that is change, but not what we were promised. Obam suckig up to every despot, dictator, and Socialist thug on the planet. Ok that is change (granted Carter, did it first).

I am still waiting for him to fulfill ONE promise he made during the campaign. I am not going to hold my breath.

Maybe Obama was practicing to take photos of AF1 as NYC panics? Or maybe looking for the reset button?

  12. BLBC your argument proves your idiocy. OMG THE PRESIDENT IS TAKING PICSHAS, LET’S IMPEACH HIM, HE’S WASTING TAIM! Get over yourself you paranoid hack.

  13. By way of the photo description, it is someone else’s camera.

But, Pete Souza, for those of us that followed his campaign documentation, shoots with a 5D (may have been a mkII). It was also the first time the official Presidential headshot was taken with a digital camera.

  14. Wow, nice unbiased first comment.

Oh, and full support to Canon for dying on me for unseen reasons, and thank you Canon for being so eager to help. Because you know, a camera not turning on for no reason is my fault, therefore I should pay for it.

  15. Canon vs. Nikon is a completely useless argument. If you can’t even grasp that the difference between mediocrity and excellence is the person behind the camera and a strong understanding of the basic concepts of light and composition, then you are no photographer at all. You can take a beautiful photograph with a 50 year old 35mm camera with the right knowledge and enough practice. You can also take a P.O.S. photograph with a D700 or a EOS-1 Mk III if you don’t know what you’re doing. The camera is simply a tool. A better camera does not make you a better photographer.

That being said, Pete Souza, you are truly magnificent at capturing these little candid moments! I very much enjoy this series showing a lighter-hearted side of our new president and look forward to seeing even more of your work as you travel with the Obamas over the next 4 years.

  16. Hey everyone did you hear about obama’s latest screw up with flying air force one into lower Manhattan? Maybe someone should post a picture of everyone running for their life. Could you imagine if Bush did that? But since its obama that’s fine.

  17. BLBC, nice and delusional as most in your position are. Talking points you say? I could have written your response myself as I’ve been hearing this stock answer for the last 4 or 5 years as the buildup to all of this has slowly and painfully made itself clear. You can knock the current administration all you want, and I surely believe that any president (or politician) requires close watch and criticism, but to come out as and criticize as a Bushie fan boy, it shows your true colors and completely dismisses your credibility and in turn anything you have to say as opinion. Do some actual research, look at studies collected and presented by someone other than F*X news, and you will see that not only are your presumptions about Europe and the rest of the world wrong, you are in a HUGE minority in your narrow mindedness in the current global climate. Ask anyone outside of this country (or even inside it) who they feel has most influenced the current state of global financial affairs, lack of safety for not only us in the US, but the whole of the first world in the last decade and I bet you would get a resoundingly singular answer. You have proven to me that you have absolutely nothing of any intelligence to contribute to a conversation as you appear to enjoy being a flamer and antagonist, thereby becoming a joke to those of us that care to even pay attention to you. Therefore, I am removing myself from that category. Good bye.

  18. Canon! Canon! Canon! 🙂

Naw, but you can tell he’s never held a SLR in his life. Bless his heart. I just hope his conscious guides his policy

  19. Cool shot Mr Souza! I agree with ElizabethMartin, it’s not what you’ve got but how you use it. Strip the EXIF data and who’d know? I’m left handed too, but don’t find the 40D a problem. I think he’s just used to holding a compact camera. Stick with, maybe Pete could lend him an old dSLR? Now there’s a photostream I’d watch, just to see how his skills develop. He’d have enough people willing to teach him a few things.

  20. BLBC – Actually all of the friends I have in Europe like President Obama, and they talk about how hopeful the countries there are about him being in office. However, I should have known you were a fire starter with this comment: "The last admin kept us safe." Seriously??? OMG!

    You a delusional.

  21. Excellent!

Are you the same photographer who featured in a recent article in the National Geographic magazine?

Really enjoyed reading and gave a great insight into a world that most do not get to see.

To all who feel the need to vent their personal opinions of the man, just give him a break. This is a photography website not a political sounding board for your opinionated thoughts. Lets value the photos on their merits.

Seen in your Delivering on Change set. (?²ˣ)

  22. Fantastic shot…I’m impressed by his choice of camera. Plus it’s nice not to feel a little uncomfortable about a US president wielding a big Can(n)on too 🙂

  23. wow great shot…and excellent capture…’
    u r such a wonderful photographer..
    Magnificent portrait
A great President A great country
wishing you all the best President Barack Obama

    Mohamad Swaidan
    I’m photographer from kuwait , hobbyist ..
I love to take the artistic photos shots ..
I love photography because it’s the best way to save all your memoriesI think the photos in many cases is more important than the talking or explaining .

  24. Ok, I will say this.

I bought canon 40d, but I wanted to switch to nikon. Somehow I thought it would be good thing, that everybody is speaking about nikon. I started to think that it’s somehow better then canon. But now I see, that nikon users is a bunch of winers. What’s the point in the brand? It’s you that is the most important thing. Not the camera. And here I see a lot of users wining that president is taking one picture witch canon, and all of them are not happy about it. Grow up people. Or are you just pretending to look stupid?

Now I’m really gonna stick to canon, cause I would be ashamed to join Nikon camp with a bunch of winers and showoffs.

    pardon my english..

  25. damn! All those rich and powerful men with their nice toys 🙁 it’s kinda unfair that those powerful newbies could afford such nice cameras when they don’t even know how to properly hold them 🙁 BUT I do like Obama as president though 😉

  26. Does ANYONE read the caption or others’ posts before slapping their own comment on this photo?

~the camera was borrowed for a photo opportunity, that’s it . . . A set and posed photo. He wasn’t shooting with it, he barely knew how to hold it (right OR left handed)

~Yes, the photostream is very insightful. To say that this is a whole new breed of presidential duty or family is ridiculous. With the advancement and increasing popularity of cameras & photography, it only makes sense that the general public would see more of what ALL presidential families and life in general is like.

With all of that being said . . . I think many of Mr. Souza’s photos are great shots and shed light on parts of presidential life we have not been privy to in the past. Great job . . .

  27. Barak is a down to earth human being that cares about so much. His Family, his country and having fun all at the same time. One minor adjustment should be made with this photo. Switch it with a Nikon! LOL! BY THE WAY PEOPLE…THE CAMERA IS NOT HIS…IT’S BORROWED FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER FROM BEHIND THE SCENES!
HE MAY BE A NIKON LOVER!

CAN WE ASK HIM IF HE IS A CANON OR A NIKON FAN?

  28. Running with siccors says Barak is a retard…I wonder if running with siccors has ever thought that maybe he could be retarded if he runs with siccors? Not a lot of thought went into that comment with a profile name like that. LOL… This is all in fun, now.

  29. He can’t even hold a camera properly! How can we hope for him to hold our future?!

And to address him being a "canon man": Its NOT EVEN HIS CAMERA!

  30. He doesn’t claim to be a photographer. Who cares if he’s not holding the camera properly? I don’t think it has anything to do with the way he’ll run this country… I actually think this photo shows how laid back and funny the Obama family is. It’s nice to see how normal they are.

  31. to all the folks commenting about Canon vs. Nikon: get a life. Seriously. Do you really think Obama cared when he borrowed the camera? It DOESN’T MATTER! Consumerists.

  32. I voted for Obama because I was extremely impressed with his political skills and plans; now I have another reason, he is a photographer too! Way to go, I’m glad he is our president!! 🙂

  33. Ohhhh man this is so wrong. Tax payer dollars going to Canons? Now we know why the defense budget is so large. All this time we thought they were buying cannons.

  34. Way to go Mr President O. You just unintentionally made Canon DSLR camera sales soars above the roof and offended some percentage of your voters who are using Nikon.

Pete Souza. I bag you to please take another pic of Mr President Barrack holding a Nikon D700 instead.

huhuhu. He got my support but this shot hurt me feeling as I’m a Nikon guy.

hahahaha. Nice wonderful shot anyway to look at him behind the view finder for once

  35. I used to not like Obama.. but now I know he’s on my side… canon.. lols.

Obama’s shutter button is on the left side. Canon especially made it for the President’s comfort. lols

  36. I love my Canon cameras but am thinking of switching to Nikon now. Oh wait, how silly of me, I have to pay for all the outrageous gov’t spending this misguided idiot and his radical friends in Congress have sold us out to. I can’t afford to spend money on myself.

    Way to go Hussein.

  37. If he’d actually taken a shot of AF1 himself (& got his flickr intern to upload it here) I’d excuse that faux pas myself personally…but them I’m a European Evolution Believing Agnostic Liberal Pinko Commie Subversive type…

    🙂

I don’t mind him pandering to us here as long as he actually uploads one he actually took himself sometime….

(To be read by whatever Whitehouse intern who’s job it is to follow this thread & pass it up along the chain of command to the Man himself, hopefully, eventually, whenever).

    🙂

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  38. no offense to you canonites, but why don’t you read the caption carefully, he’s holding a camera that belongs to another photographer, it’s not his. not that it really matters anyway, but it’s funny to see people jizzing about him holding a canon.

  39. lol ppl hes the president of the whole united states n u wana teach him how to hold a dSLR ? he looks cooler than anyone of u even he was holding a cheap PnS . Instead he hold the camera with style like a rangefinder

  41. This is a very telling photograph of a "People’s President".

And in fact all the photo’s of President Obama on ‘Flickr’ are certainly a welcome change and very positive for America and the ideals it stands for.

What I would like to see posted on Flickr, are snap-shots taken by President Obama.
